4) Sudan Divestment UK
As part of its campaigning activity, the UN Youth and Student Association (UNYSA) is supporting Sudan Divestment UK (’SDUK’). On Monday, a section on the ‘Get Involved!’ part of the UNYSA website will be uploaded, explaining SDUK’s work, and linking to its website. SDUK campaigns for UK companies and investors, such as pension schemes, whose funds help the Sudanese government’s military exercises in Darfur, to cease their investments in the Sudanese economy. The aim is for financial pressure, delivered through the targeted divestment of Western investors, to induce the Sudanese government to stop its genocidal activities in Darfur. For more details, visit the SDUK website: www.sudandivestment.org.uk.
The website includes details of how to start a local divestment campaign. Bristol, Cambridge, Derby, Hull, UCL, LSE, Oxford and York Universities are already working with SDUK. If you are at one of these universities, why not join the campaign? Have a think about what help your UNYSA could lend to the SDUK campaign. For more details on SDUK, send an email to info@sudandivestment.org.uk.
