STUDENT ACTION FOR FEMALE EDUCATION IN AFRICA

Student Action for Female Education (SAFE) is a student-led initiative founded within the Cambridge University United Nations Association (CUUNA). Since its creation, SAFE has grown into CUUNA’s largest external project and has since been dedicated to advancing girls’ education in Sub-Saharan Africa. In partnership with the internationally renowned NGO CAMFED, SAFE has helped raise thousands of pounds to support the primary and secondary education of young women, through comprehensive educational programmes that cover the costs of school fees, uniform, transport, food, and essentials like menstrual products. SAFE play a cooperative role, helping equip the next generation of leaders with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to drive lasting change

Our mission is to expand educational opportunities for girls and young women, empowering them to shape their futures and their communities

RECENT EVENTS

During the 2024-2025 academic year, SAFE has launched a diverse range of initiatives to strengthen the connection between CAMFED and the Cambridge student body while significantly expanding our fundraising capacity.

CAMFED Christmas Fair

At the end of Michaelmas term 2024, SAFE helped organise and execute the CAMFED annual Christmas fair, enhancing promotion through harnessing our social media platforms and providing hands-on assistance with set up and organisation. Many of the products sold were from entrepreneurs themselves supported through CAMFED’s educational programmes- evidence of the unlimited potential that can be unleashed through equitable educational practices. Through these efforts, SAFE supported CAMFED in raising over £2,000.

Women's History Month Formal

In Lent term 2025, SAFE hosted its inaugural formal at St Catharine’s College in honour of Women’s History Month. The event brought together CAMFED representatives, distinguished Cambridge alumni and fellows, and students for an evening dedicated to celebrating education and female empowerment. Through innovative fundraising methods such as QR code donations, the event raised over £300 while showcasing SAFE’s mission to the wider University community.

To mark the end of exam season 2025, SAFE organised Steps 4 Education, an interactive walk to Granchester Meadows followed by a picnic. Alongside a raffle, featuring prizes including a £50 voucher and free Jack’s Gelato, this event provided an engaging way for both undergraduate and postgraduate students to learn about SAFE’s work, connect with one another, and contribute to our fundraising goals- leading to raised funds of over £125.
